The Panic Channel, a new band featuring two founding members of Jane’s Addiction, made its formal live debut at a very sold-out radio station-sponsored holiday benefit show. Quartet incorporated some aspects of what made Jane’s such a great band — soaring Dave Navarro power chords and dramatic Stephen Perkins drum licks — while adding interesting new sounds courtesy of dynamic former Skycycle vocalist Steve Isaacs.

Navarro and Isaacs, who played the lead role in the Broadway musical “The Who’s Tommy,” also used well-placed two-part vocal harmonies –something Jane’s singer Perry Farrell always shied away from –to strong effect.

Band offered nine songs in just under an hour, with most likely destined for its upcoming debut album (due next year). They stuck mainly to mid-tempo, straight-ahead hard-rock songs, occasionally mixing in psychedelic and progressive qualities along with the occasional guitar.

Isaacs, who also played guitar for several songs, such as the show-closer “Light One,” possesses an impressive range. His confident onstage delivery combined with the talent and solid reputation of his bandmates indicates a young act with a bright future indeed.

Crowd included Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, on hand to see his daughter Clara play drums in opening band the Tints. Attendees who brought a canned food donation for the L.A. Regional Food Bank received reduced admission of $1.03.
