Weiss exits RIAA for Turner charity

VP to begin new job in May for environmental advocates

WASHINGTON — The music biz is temporarily losing its voice.

Amy Weiss, the Recording Industry Assn. of America’s top spokeswoman and communications director, has ankled her post to become the veep for public affairs at the U.N. Foundation, Ted Turner’s charity devoted to global environmental and health issues.

“Amy Weiss’ impressive background in both the public and private sector makes her a natural choice to lead our communications and advocacy team,” said U.N. Foundation prexy and former senator Timothy Wirth.

Before her stint at the RIAA, Weiss was the director of public affairs at Burson-Marsteller, where she worked for a broad range of clients, including American Airlines and PBS.

She also served as deputy press secretary in the Clinton White House and as communications director for the Democratic National Committee.

But her background in Democratic politics did not prevent her from developing a close relationship with the RIAA’s new chief exec Mitch Bainwol, who cut his teeth as a top GOP strategist.

“We will miss Amy,” Bainwol said in a statement. “She has been an enormous gift to the music community. The qualities she brings to the table — strategic insight, the ability to craft and articulate a message — were invaluable.”

Weiss will begin her new job in late May.
