ROME — Hot on the heels of the recent “La Dolce Vita” DVD, Gotham indie label Sunnyside Records is looking to lure Federico Fellini fans with “Fellini Jazz,” a musical tribute CD featuring reinterpretations of themes from the maestro’s most memorable pics.
Distributed Stateside by the Ryko Label Group, “Fellini Jazz” features 11 tracks, most composed by the late Nino Rota, who also wrote the theme from “The Godfather.”
Disc was released Tuesday in U.S. stores.
Tunes from “La Dolce Vita,” “Amarcord” and “La Strada,” among other Fellini faves, have been arranged by Italo pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and performed by an all-star quintet featuring Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Chris Potter on sax, Grammy winner Charlie Haden on bass and drummer Paul Motian.
“Fellini Jazz,” is produced by CamJazz, a unit of Rome-based CAM, Italy’s largest film soundtrack publisher.
CamJazz and Sunnyside recently inked a U.S. distribution deal covering upcoming CamJazz releases as well as the label’s 24-title catalog, which includes covers of themes by Ennio Morricone and a selection of original jazz tracks composed for Italian B movies of the 1950s and ’60s.
