Diskery taps legal, digital business brass

Sony BMG Music Entertainment has tapped former Sony Music lawyer Lisa Weiss senior VP, general counsel and secretary, and upped former BMG chief strategic officer Thomas Hesse to president, Global Digital Business.

Hesse will oversee the newly created Global Digital Business operating group, which will develop Sony BMG’s digital revenues worldwide and lead Sony BMG’s overall efforts in new technology.

Since 2002, Hesse has been responsible for mergers and acquisitions, and business development as well as for setting the strategic direction for BMG’s digital business and new-technology initiatives.

Prior to joining BMG, he was executive veep and head of corporate strategy at Bertelsmann in Guetersloh, Germany. A former concert pianist, Hesse had previously held a number of executive positions at the company’s television division RTL, including secretary general of RTL Television and CEO of RTL New Media.

In addition, Hesse has named two senior vice presidents in the Global Digital Business operating group. Thomas Gewecke will oversee the development of Sony BMG’s digital revs worldwide, directly responsible for all relationships with digital partners and revenues generated in the U.S. He also will coordinate the international digital business development.

Matt Carpenter will oversee content encoding and digitization efforts for the company, including the AOMA digital asset management system. He also will lead the European operations team.

In her new position, Weiss will be responsible for overall legal policy, and will oversee all aspects of the Sony BMG Music Entertainment Law Department’s operations. A former partner at the New York law firm of Rosenman & Colin, Weiss had been with Sony Music since 2000. She reports to Sony BMG CEO Andrew Lack.
