Channel to bow next February

JOHANNESBURG — MTV is launching a new 24-hour channel in Africa, which will give a platform to a variety of music genres from the continent alongside U.S. and U.K. programming featuring international artist.

The African version of MTV Networks Europe’s urban music service, MTV Base, will bow in sub-Saharan Africa next February.

The English-lingo channel will be broadcast via satellite to 1.3-million households in 48 countries as part of South-African-based pay TV firm Multichoice’s Digital Satellite Television platform. Multichoice has carried MTV programing since 1995.

MTV aims to play a social role in Africa by getting involved in AIDS education.

It will introduce HIV/Aids awareness and prevention messages, in addition to airing programming from MTV Intl.’s “Staying Alive” series.
