Grammys to salute Salonen

L.A. Philharmonic artistic director to be feted Feb. 10

The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences will honor L.A. Philharmonic artistic director Esa-Pekka Salonen during February’s Grammy Week ceremonies saluting classical music, jazz and gospel.

Salonen will be feted Feb. 10 at the ninth annual Grammy Salute to Classical Music at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. Conductor Richard Kaufman will serve as master of ceremonies.

Saxophonist Benny Golson, singer Jon Hendricks and pianist Horace Silver will be saluted Feb. 8 at the second Salute to Jazz at the Music Box at the Fonda Theater. The honorees are expected to perform.

For the first time, the academy will hold a gospel celebration, set for Feb. 10 at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ Cathedral. The first President’s Merit Award honorees for this event include Andrae Crouch, Bill and Gloria Gaither and Albertina Walker. Event will feature perfs from CeCe Winans, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Byron Cage, Nicole C. Mullen, Donald Lawrence and Smokie Norful & the Crabb Family.
