MTV has picked up another season of reality series “Laguna Beach — The Real Orange County” and ordered a slate of “MTV Ultimate Mash-Up” specs.
“Laguna Beach” ranked among the top five series on basic cable in the music net’s target 12- to 34-year-old aud. Finale bowed to nearly 3 million viewers, bringing the season average to 2.2 million.
Production begins this month for a summer launch. Second season will premiere in conjunction with the release of the first season DVD.
Series, shot on film to create what MTV dubbed a “reality drama,” followed eight Southern California teens as they waded through a year of high school.
Second season will pick up with several cast members returning for their senior year. “Laguna Beach” was created by Liz Gateley, who exec produces with Tony DiSanto and Gary Auerbach.
Elsewhere, MTV has ordered five more “Mash-Ups.” Multi-platform events each include an MTV spec, a CD and a DVD.
Event debuted Nov. 10 with “Jay-Z vs. Linkin Park,” with the CD and DVD released on Nov. 30. In addition, the CD was streamed online at the Leak on MTV.com before it was available in stores and received close to 1 million requests.
“The live concert, the MTV special, the Leak on MTV.com and the CD/DVD release gave fans ultimate access to this amazing collaboration, and we look forward to teaming up with more dynamic music artists for future episodes,” said MTV Networks entertainment prexy Brian Graden.
Artists for future specs have not been announced.
