NEW YORK — Steve Bartels has been named president of Universal Music’s Island Def Jam Music Group, replacing Julie Greenwald, who ankled the position in March.
Based in Gotham, Bartels will report to Island chairman L.A. Reid, who took over the label after former chief Lyor Cohen jumped ship to Warner Music in February.
Greenwald followed Cohen to Warner last month amid an unprecedented senior reshuffling of the music group after its sale to an investor group led by Edgar Bronfman Jr.
Bartels previously worked with Reid at Arista Records, where as an executive VP he helped break artists including Usher, OutKast, Pink, Avril Lavigne and Dido. Prior to Arista, he was national director of promotion at A&M Records.
In a statement, Reid commended Bartels’ “unparalleled expertise, leadership and dedication to artists and their music.”
