‘D-12 World’ in sales stratosphere

Crooner Usher'd out of top spot, but rose 9,000 copies

“D-12 World,” the sophomore disc from Eminem’s D-12 rap sextet, posted the highest one-week sales for a hip-hop act this year, according to SoundScan.

The Shady/Interscope CD sold 544,000 copies in the week ended Sunday to take the top spot away from Usher’s “Confessions” (LaFace), which had held at No. 1 for five weeks. D-12 posted the fourth-best debut numbers of the year, topped only by Usher, Norah Jones and Kenny Chesney. In 2001, D-12’s “Devil’s Night” also debuted at No. 1, selling 372,000 units.

“Confessions” actually saw a sales spike last week, rising 9,000 copies to 262,000 sold to take No. 2.

Other debuts in the top 10 were Diana Krall’s “The Girl in the Other Room” (Verve), with 144,000 sold, and the “American Idol Finalists: Season 3 — Greatest Soul Classics” (RCA), which moved 55,000.

Sales of Krall’s album, which debuted at No. 4, earned her her biggest week ever. The jazz singer-pianist’s collection of songs from contempo writers such as new husband Elvis Costello is her eighth album.

Prince’s “Musicology” (Columbia) held at No. 3, selling 172,000 copies, which included tallies from four concerts where the disc is given to attendees.

Evanescence, holding strong at No. 9, sold 59,000 copies of “Fallen” (Wind-Up) to pass the 5 million sold mark.

Beyonce’s “Live at Wembley,” a CD-DVD package from Columbia, debuted at No. 17 on sales of 55,000. Loretta Lynn’s “Van Lear Rose” (Interscope), produced by the White Stripes’ Jack White, who also performs on the disc, posted sales of 37,000. At No. 24, it is her highest-charting pop album in her 40-year recording career.

Fellow country singer Mary Chapin Carpenter landed at No. 50, selling 19,000 copies of her latest Columbia release “Between Here and Gone.” Patti Smith’s first album for Columbia, “Trampin’,” sold 9,000 copies in its first week.
