Pact calls for two picture books and a chapter book

Whoopi Goldberg has inked a multibook deal with Hyperion kiddie imprint Jump at the Sun.

Goldberg, no stranger to the publishing world, has penned bestselling memoir “Book” and children’s title “Alice,” an urban retelling of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

“Books and reading have always been an important part of my life,” said Goldberg. Aware of her commitment and interest in writing more, Hyperion set up a meeting with Goldberg.

Pact calls for two picture books and a chapter book, the first of which will be in stores by fall 2005. While tomes’ topics were not revealed, imprint focuses on content that celebrates diversity.

“What we’re really looking forward to is she’s going to bring her own tell-it-like-it-is humor,” said Jump at the Sun edit director Jackie Carter. “The books will feature characters that we’re all going to enjoy, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they had a life beyond books.”
