'Caroline, or Change' among prominent shutouts

“Wicked,” the new tuner about the witches from Oz, led the way at the Outer Critics Circle Awards, winning four honors, including the Broadway musical nod.

“I Am My Own Wife” added to its trophy shelf, taking the Broadway play nod and the award for solo perf for Jefferson Mays.

The revival of “Wonderful Town” also had a strong showing, winning three awards including the musical revival nod as well as actress in a musical kudos for Donna Murphy.

Among the more prominent shows shut out was “Caroline, or Change,” which played both on Broadway and Off during the 2003-04 season.

It was considered in the Broadway musical category, where it lost to “Wicked.” Meanwhile, the Off Broadway musical trophy was split between two shows that received lackluster notices: “The Thing About Men” and “Johnny Guitar.”

Other notable choices from the org, comprising theater critics and writers for publications outside Gotham, were Frank Langella, actor in a play, for “Match”; Eileen Atkins, actress in a play, for “The Retreat From Moscow”; and Hugh Jackman, actor in a musical, for “The Boy From Oz.”
