Peter Strauss replaces Laurence Luckinbill in Jon Robin Baitz’s new play, “Chinese Friends,” at Playwrights Horizons.
The casting switch pushes back the performance sked a few days. Previews begin May 7, with opening night set for May 27.
Despite the last-minute substitution, Strauss is no stranger to the Baitz script. e performed developmental readings of “Chinese Friends” last summer at the Ojai Playwrights Conference.
Robert Egan, who directed “Chinese Friends” at Ojai, repeats those duties at Playwrights Horizons. The Gotham cast includes Tyler Francavilla, Will McCormack and Bess Wohl.
Set in 2030, “Chinese Friends” is a futuristic political thriller that follows a son and his father, who 20 years earlier was an important White House adviser in what Strauss describes as “a post-apocalyptic 9/11 America.” Strauss said the play is not a roman a clef on the Bush administration, “but you know of whom we speak.”
