DURHAM, N.C. — Gore Vidal’s “On the March to the Sea” will be produced by Theater Previews at Duke U. The Feb. 22-March 6 run will be a “staged theatrical concert reading” along the lines of A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters.” A developmental reading was staged during the fall at Hartford Stage Company.
Vidal will be in residence at Duke and will be involved in the production process as well as related academic activities.
Warner Shook, who directed the world premiere of Robert Schenkkan’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Kentucky Cycle,” will direct.
Play is set at the Civil War’s height as a Southerner christens a palatial new home and sends his sons off to war, only to have Union soldiers commandeer his estate, forcing him to choose between duty to his friends and the Confederacy or protecting his legacy.
Vidal is the author of 22 novels and has written extensively for various other media.
