North American gross nears $190 mil

“Mamma Mia!,” the Abba musical, has passed the $1 billion mark in worldwide grosses and been seen by more than 20 million people.

Earlier this year, the hit tuner celebrated its fifth anniversary in the West End, where it debuted in April 1999.

It has grossed nearly $190 million in North America alone this year, including its Broadway stand at the Winter Garden Theater, plus companies at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay and Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theater, and a North American road tour.

Internationally, in 2005 the show will tour to Johannesburg, Estonia, Lisbon, Brussels, Paris, Austria, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, Stockholm and Korea.

Catherine Johnson wrote the book around songs by Abba’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus; Phyllida Lloyd directed and Anthony Van Laast did the choreography.
