Thesp returns to the stage in 'Commandments'
NEW YORK — Val Kilmer has been cast as Moses in the upcoming stage musical “The Ten Commandments,” set to open Sept. 27 at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater. It won’t be the actor’s first stab at the biblical character. Kilmer gave voice to — and sang — Moses in DreamWorks’ “The Prince of Egypt.” Prior to his film career, Kilmer performed in several stage ventures including “Henry IV, Part 1,” ” ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore” and “How It All Began” at the Public Theater in New York. The musical “Commandments” toured Belgium, Switzerland and France in 2003. The U.S. production makes its debut in a revamped version, with music by Patrick Leonard (“Like a Prayer”) and lyrics by Meribeth Derry. Robert Iscove directs. Previews will begin Sept. 18. Show’s producers, BCBGMaxAzria Entertainment and 7Art, expect it to tour North America after the Hollywood engagement. Slightly more traditional legit casting rounds out the ensemble of the much more irreverent “Spamalot.” Douglas Sills, Michael McGrath, Steve Rosen and Sara Ramirez join the previously announced David Hyde Pierce, Tim Curry and Hank Azaria in the new Monty Python musical. It will open March 10 on Broadway at the Shubert Theater.
