The Vineyard Theater has landed the Gotham preem of “After Ashley.”
Gina Gionfriddo’s play about a family tragedy that turns into a media circus was the hit of the recent Humana Festival in Louisville, Ky. Last year’s fest entry “Omnium Gatherum” went on to receive an Off Broadway production as well as a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in drama.
In his Variety review of the 2004 Humana Fest, Chris Jones noted that “After Ashley” was “the play with the buzz” and that it established “newcomer Gionfriddo as a new name with a boffo future on either coast. She can write the kind of scintillating dialogue that would enliven many a Hollywood property.” Several other critics offered equally upbeat assessments of the work and its writer, who lives in Providence, R.I.
In 2002, Gionfriddo’s play “U.S. Drag” won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
Although dates have not been set, “After Ashley” will be staged during the Vineyard’s 2004-05 season.
The Humana Festival of New American Plays is produced by the Actors Theater of Louisville.
