Gotham bow for Blanchett

'Hedda' will start four-week engagement in March

NEW YORK — Cate Blanchett is set to make her Gotham stage debut at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The actress will headline “Hedda Gabler” in the Sydney Theater Company’s production of the Henrik Ibsen classic. BAM executive producer Joseph V. Melillo extended the invitation to STC after seeing the company’s “Hedda Gabler” in August.

Revival opens March 1, 2006, for a four-week engagement. STC artistic director Robyn Nevin helms the production, which features a new adaptation by Andrew Upton.

Annie Byron, Justine Clarke, Julie Hamilton, Hugo Weaving, Anthony Weigh and Aden Young round out the cast.

Hedda Gabler has not been a stranger to New York stages. Elizabeth Marvel played her this fall in a modern-dress staging by Ivo Van Hove at New York Theater Workshop. Kate Burton portrayed the Ibsen heroine on Broadway during the 2001-02 season.

Onscreen, Blanchett plays Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s December release “The Aviator.”
