Review: ‘Mr. Virgin’

Judging by his tyro feature, "Mr. Virgin," writer-director Przemek Angerman certainly knows his Beavis & Butt-head. His vision of two young dudes spending their lives either glued to the tube or trying to score is often like live-action B&B, sans gross-out indulgences. It only rarely works though. Euro and world prospects aren't too hot.

Judging by his tyro feature, “Mr. Virgin,” writer-director Przemek Angerman certainly knows his Beavis & Butt-head. His vision of two young dudes spending their lives either glued to the tube or trying to score is often like live-action B&B, sans gross-out indulgences. It only rarely works, though, since the urge for anarchic sexual humor is subdued, even with leads Radek Kaim and Krzysztof Pralat giving it their all. Pic won comedy prize at the 2003 edition of Gydnia fest but drooped at the B.O. amid controversy over sexy content. Euro and world prospects aren’t too hot.

Bogo (Kaim) and Rychu (Pralat) appear to be lifelong buddies but have different views on sex. Bogo wants to pick up gals but has to prod shy Rychu along. Though there’s an air of poignant desperation when Bogo laments, “Dude, we have to concentrate. Time is running out,” comedy’s general tone is frisky and light as the pair bounce among a lineup of increasingly sophisticated gals. Arkadiusz Jakubik plays it up as a shifty, videocam-toting Lothario. Polish title better captures pic’s anti-p.c. mode — “How to Do It With Girls.”
