Japan’s newly refinanced and renamed distrib Wise Policy secured Japanese rights to fiercely contested “Dear Wendy” from Danish outfit Trust Film Sales and to Miramax’s “Dear Frankie.”
Helmed by Thomas Vinterberg and scripted by Lars von Trier, “Dear Wendy” tells the story of neglected youths in a desolate U.S. mining town finding reason in life through an old revolver they name Wendy. Toplining Jamie Bell (“Billy Elliot”) and Bill Pullman, pic, currently in post-production, has been shot entirely in Europe, partly using closed German coal mines as backdrops.
“Dear Frankie,” helmed by Shona Auerbach, is one of the completed titles Miramax Intl. brought to the Cannes market.
“It’s exciting for us,” says Wise Policy prexy Atsushi Okita. “There was a lot of competition for ‘Dear Wendy,’ and we won.”
Fusun Eriksen of Trust Film Sales confirms the bidding was furious and the price was “a very good one.”
