M'max topper talks up 'Cursed,' 'Sin City'

Miramax Films is employing a little-used sales tool at the American Film Market: Harvey Weinstein.

An unusually fit and sanguine Harvey roamed the halls of the Loews Santa Monica Hotel on Friday afternoon, a few hours before Miramax Intl.’s annual party. And in addition to talking up Miramax’s top sales titles, “Cursed” and “Sin City,” he sang the praises of the market.

“I love the AFM,” Harvey told Daily Variety. “I come here every year.”

While Harvey may adore the annual film marketplace, it would be an exaggeration to suggest that he’s made a habit of attending.

Miramax insiders confirm that it’s been years since he’s made an appearance.

So what’s he doing here?

Well, a couple of things may have caught his interest.

Now that Miramax is no longer screening “Hostage” for would-be buyers and has given the Bruce Willis action pic a Jan. 21 release date, the AFM is a good place to check out the competition. Among the titles that have also claimed that date is Focus Features’ “Assault on Precinct 13,” which stars Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne. Focus’ show reel features the trailer.

It would also be a good time for Weinstein to re-establish ties with the world’s buyers, as it’s possible that this could be the last AFM for Miramax Intl. head Rick Sands. He’s expected to move to DreamWorks when his contract expires (Daily Variety, Aug. 19).

And then there’s the world outside Santa Monica. With Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s Mouse House prospects uncertain, speculation remains high that they’re taking time to check out prospective studio partners.
