‘Valentin’ heartens Chicago Latino fest

Agresti pic to open as event celebrates 20th anni

HOLLYWOOD — The 20th Chicago Latino Film Festival kicks off April 16 with Miramax domestic pickup “Valentin,” a bittersweet coming-of-age story from Argentina.

Award-winning pic by Alejandro Agresti opens in New York and Los Angeles on May 7 as part of a platform release.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, fest will unspool 11 pics from past editions.

“We hoped to screen as many as 24 films, but it was hard to find the prints,” said event director Pepe Vargas.

Fest organizers expect attendance of nearly 1,000, as in past editions. The Art Institute of Chicago auditorium has a seating capacity of 980.

Event will celebrate the bicentennial of Haiti with a retrospective of documentaries, features and shorts on the island by European, Canadian and Haitian filmmakers. Other sidebars include a Mexican Night led by Antonio Urrutia’s “Asesino en serio” (A Serious Killer) and A Night of Spain with “Eres mi heroe” (My Hero) among the titles. Fest wraps May 28 with Chilean blockbuster “Sexo con amor” (Sex With Love) by Boris Quercia.
