To’s ‘PTU’ in hands of Palm

Hong Kong 'SWAT' won best director at local film nods

Palm Pictures has picked up North American and Caribbean distribution rights to Johnnie To’s cop thriller “PTU,” screening in the Cannes market.

Pic is a Hong Kong equivalent to “SWAT,” focusing on a Police Tactical Unit that tries to make its way home in the midst of an all-out gang war on the mean streets of Hong Kong.

Pic received 10 nominations at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, where To won best director.

Palm previously released To’s “Fulltime Killer.”

To’s latest feature, “Breaking News” premieres in official selection out of competition Friday at Cannes.

Deal for “PTU” was brokered by David Koh, head of acquisitions and production for Palm, with Sara Law of Mei Ah Entertainment. Distrib is planning an early 2005 theatrical release Stateside followed by a DVD release.
