Debrauwer's 2nd effort sweeping festival

BRUSSELS — Belgian director Lieven Debrauwer’s second release, “Confituur” (or “Sweet Jam”), has been selected for the International Competition at this year’s AFI Fest in Los Angeles, where the film will receive its North American premiere.

“Sweet Jam,” which has won standing ovations at screenings in Europe, follows Debrauwer’s award-winning debut, “Pauline & Paulette.” The AFI Fest catalogue describes it as “a poignant yet wry second feature about love and the confounding ways we find to test its limits. Like the best Flemish painters, Debrauwer has an exquisite eye for detail, manifesting itself in both the simple yet rich look of the film, and the stellar performances he elicits from his cast, especially Marilou Mermans as the triumphantly resilient Emma.”
