Heading into the school holidays in Europe, “Shark Tale” was the biggest fish in the ocean over the weekend, signaling a B.O. upturn after a couple of becalmed months.
DreamWorks toon caught $27.7 million from around 4,100 locations in 24 markets, boosting cume to $53.5 million, according to UIP’s projections.
That reps the healthiest biz for the weekend’s No. 1 title abroad since “I, Robot” uploaded $31.3 million in early August.
Pic voiced by Will Smith, Robert De Niro and Renee Zellweger netted an estimated $12.6 million on 510 situations in the U.K., including $4.5 million from the prior weekend’s sneaks. That was 53% bigger than the bow of the original “Shrek,” with previews.
“Shark” hauled in some $3.7 million on 626 in France (16% ahead of “Shrek,” which launched during school vacation); $2.75 million on 684 in Germany (on par with “Shrek”); $685,000 on 88 in Poland (100% up on the ogre); $515,000 on 77 in Austria (58% better); and $420,000 on 90 in Belgium (27% to the good).
“Shark Tale” has “great international playability as evidenced by its strong openings and fabulous holds,” said UIP prexy Andrew Cripps. “It is clearly the first-choice family film for the October holidays.”
UIP has top three titles
UIP dominated the weekend, with the frame’s top three titles. “Collateral” nailed a projected $11.9 million from 3,050 screens in 27 markets, elevating cume to $59.2 million.
Tom Cruise/Jamie Foxx starrer trapped an estimated $1.8 million from 235 in Australia, $2.1 million on 370 in Spain and $2.3 million on 367 in Italy — No. 1 in all. Michael Mann-helmed thriller commanded roughly $1.4 million on 140 in South Korea in a close race for line honors with the soph sesh of local click “My Brother.”
Based on those impressive bows and with Japan ahead, Cripps is convinced “Collateral” will surpass its domestic cume of $100 million. Exec is also heartened by the film’s holding power, pointing to the fourth weekend drop of 22% in Germany (where it’s earned $6.1 million to date) and the 35% decline in its third in France (pocketing $8.1 million). Hitman saga has amassed a superb $14.5 million in the U.K.
“Terminal” rang up an estimated $5.9 million in UIP’s markets, hoisting cume past domestic’s to $83.8 million. Tom Hanks/Catherine Zeta-Jones starrer eased by a mild 19% in Germany, minting $2.6 million, bringing the 11-day market tally to a sturdy $7.1 million.
Second thoughts on ‘Bride’
After a tony bow in the U.K., Bollywood musical “Bride & Prejudice” sank by a worrying 47%, whistling up an estimated $1.5 million, for a cume of $5.5 million.
“White Chicks” picked up a fair $1.6 million on 340 in Blighty and a blah $850,000 on 200 in Spain. Sony’s comedy has fetched $1.9 million through its second weekend in Germany (down 29%) and $2.1 million after its third in Mexico (off just 2%). Pic’s grossed $16.3 million in 21 markets.
“I, Robot” ruled for the fifth consecutive weekend in soft trading in Japan, drawing $1.4 million to up the territory total to $29 million and foreign cume to $187 million.
“Man on Fire” crashed and burned in France (mustering $998,000 on 340) but was OK in Belgium ($297,000 on 41). In its second sojourns, Denzel Washington starrer plunged by 44% in Spain, banking a decent $3.8 million so far, and by 31% in the U.K., tallying $2.7 million. Estimated cume is a measly $31 million, with Japan the only remaining major market.
“Garfield: The Movie” climbed to $113 million, helped by a frisky $399,000 on 150 in Thailand, where it trailed the soph sesh of “Shark Tale.”
