Pic based on Pisano novel, offers glimpse inside the profession

NEW YORK — Marking the first pickup out of the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, Screen Media Films has acquired North American rights to Spanish actress-turned-director Maria “Luna” Lidon’s English-language prostitution drama “Whore,” starring Daryl Hannah, Denise Richards and Joaquim de Almeida.

Based on the Spanish bestseller by Isabel Pisano, pic offers an intimate glimpse inside the world’s oldest profession, examining male and female prostitutes through a blend of fact and fiction that also mixes traditional cinematography with digital technology.

Screen Media head Robert Baruc and sales/marketing chief Suzanne Blech closed the deal with producer Jose Magan of Dolores Pictures.

A September theatrical release is planned, with video and DVD to follow via Screen Media’s label deal with Universal Studios Home Video.

U.S. premiere of the film will take place May 7 in the feature competition of the third Tribeca Film Festival, which runs May 1-9.
