‘Punto’ primo at L.A. Latino film fest

Guerilla drama takes top kudos

Elia Schneider’s “Punto y raya” of Venezuela grabbed the best picture award at the eighth Los Angeles Latino Intl. Film Festival, which wrapped Sunday.

Drama on the guerrilla conflict in Colombia and Venezuela is Schneider’s sophomore feature after 1999’s “Huelepega,” which focused on the young glue sniffers of Caracas, Venezuela.

Entries from Argentina dominated the awards, including Alejandro Chomski’s “Hoy y manana,” which drew debut feature kudos, Mario Sabato’s “India Praville” (screenplay) and Argentinian-Spanish co-production “Conversaciones con mama” by Santiago Carlos Oves (the audience award).

Fernando Solanas’ “Memoria del saqueo,” also of Argentina, took home the docu nod. Nancy Savoca of the U.S. nabbed director kudos for her pic “Dirt.”

Short award was shared by U.S. entries “Pelea de Gallos,” by Joel Juarez Sanchez, and “Premeditation,” by Alberto Barboza. These will qualify to compete for an Oscar in the same category.

Paulo Sacramento’s gritty look at prisons in Brazil, “O Prisioneiro da Grade de Ferro,” took the debut doc prize.

The 10-day fest run by actor Edward James Olmos and co-founder/director Marlene Dermer claimed a total audience count of 25,000.
