95% of $100 mil annual box office goes to H'w'd pix

LISBON — Portugal is finally catching up with the rest of Europe as it’s begun issuing official weekly data on box office rankings, admissions and revenues.

Portuguese distribs have maintained computerized B.O. rankings since the mid-1990s but comparative national data have never been provided until now.

Initiative, promoted by the Portuguese film institute Icam, is supported by the principal distributors in Portugal, in particular Lusomundo, which has an estimated 50% national market share.

The top 10 issued for this week was dominated exclusively by American blockbusters. Hollywood films are estimated to have over a 95% share of the $100 million annual box office. In the last six months, only two local films made the top 50, in 33rd and 49th place.

ICAM has invested $150,000 in the new system.
