Akin's Berlin hit heads to France
BERLIN — Bavaria Film Intl. has sold Cannes screener “Whisky” and Berlinale winner “Head-On” to French distrib MK2.
“Whisky,” a comedy by Uruguayan helmers Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll, is unspooling in Un Certain Regard. Pic was co-produced by Uruguay’s Control-Z Films, Argentina’s Rizoma Films and Germany’s Pandora Filmproduktion in cooperation with Spain’s Wanda Vision and Canal Plus.
Fatih Akin’s “Head-On,” which won the Berlinale’s Golden Bear, is the story of a Turkish woman in Hamburg who escapes her restrictive family in a marriage of convenience.
“We are very happy to have found a strong partner in MK2,” said Thorsten Schaumann, Bavaria’s head of sales. “MK2 has proven its passion and ability for arthouse films, not only as a distributor but also as a producer.”
MK2 is releasing “Head-On” in France on July 21.
Meanwhile, Bavaria has picked up world sale rights to Chilean director Raoul Ruiz’s “Le livre a vendre.”
Pic, about the friendship between a Chilean pilot and a boy that begins during WWII, stars Bernard Giraudeau, Marisa Paredes and Gregoire Colin. Paris-based Elzevir Film produced the E3.2 million ($3.8 million) film.
