Penn, Theron draw Satellites

Bello, Hounsou receive supporting kudos

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn received Satellite Awards from the Intl. Press Academy on Saturday night for their work in “Monster” and in “Mystic River” and “21 Grams,” respectively.

The eighth annual kudofest honors achievements in cinema, television and interactive media.

Diane Keaton (“Something’s Gotta Give”) and Bill Murray (“Lost in Translation”) garnered the actress and actor in a motion picture, comedy or musical prizes, while “In America” helmer Jim Sheridan received the director award.

Honored for their supporting perfs for drama were Maria Bello (“The Cooler”) and Djimon Hounsou (“In America”); on the comedy/musical side, winners were Patricia Clarkson (“Pieces of April”) and Eugene Levy (“A Mighty Wind”).

“In America” took the Satellite for motion picture (drama) while “Lost in Translation” nabbed the kudos for motion picture (comedy/musical).

Screenplay awards went to Sofia Coppola for “Lost in Translation” (original) and Brian Helgeland for “Mystic River” (adapted).

On the TV side, “Angels in America” was named best miniseries, and Meryl Streep (actress) and Justin Kirk (supporting actor) took home trophies.

James Woods was honored for his perf as the title character in “Rudy: The Rudy Giuliani Story,” also winner of the made-for-TV movie trophy.

“The Shield” took kudos for TV series (drama) as well as actor and actress (Michael Chiklis, CCH Pounder). On the comedy side, Jessica Walter and Jeffrey Tambor took supporting kudos for “Arrested Development,” winner of the series prize (comedy or musical).

Bernie Mac (“The Bernie Mac Show”) and Jane Kaczmarek (“Malcolm in the Middle”) received lead thesp kudos for comedy series.

The Mary Pickford Award in recognition of outstanding artistic contribution to the entertainment industry went to Arnon Milchan and the Telsa Award for visionary achievements in the world of digital technology and sound went to James Cameron.
