Par launches kiddie ‘Lunch’

Carpenter tapped to pen adaptation of first book

Paramount has decided to put an extra-terrestrial twist on the buddy comedy, acquiring film rights to the trilogy of children’s books “Aliens for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner” for Par-based producer Jordan Kerner as a potential franchise.

Studio has tapped Steve Carpenter to pen an adaptation of the first book in the series, “Aliens for Breakfast,” which was written by Jonathan Etra and Stephanie Spinner.

Story revolves around a curmudgeonly alien space cop sent to Earth to find an escaped alien convict and landing in the apartment of an unsuspecting junior high school principal. The duo are forced to become partners and capture the convict alien.

Kerner Entertainment production head Paul Neesan will exec produce and supervise development. Production prexy Karen Rosenfelt will oversee the projects.

Kerner first announced development of “Aliens for Breakfast” in 2001 at Disney and developed a version penned by “Monsters Inc.” scribes Dan Gerson & Robert Baird.

Carpenter, repped by WMA, is completing a re-write of Paramount/Kerner’s “Guam Goes to the Moon” and co-wrote New Line’s “The Man,” currently in production with Samuel Jackson and Eugene Levy with Les Mayfield helming. Carpenter also co-wrote Martin Lawrence starrer “Blue Streak,” which Mayfield also helmed.
