Palm grabs ‘Cronicas’ rights

Spanish thrill ride will preem in Toronto

Palm Pictures has bought North American and Caribbean rights to Sebastian Cordero’s Spanish-language thriller “Cronicas.” John Leguizamo, Alfred Molina and Damian Alcazar head the cast.

Pic was produced through Jorge Vergara and Alfonso Cuaron’s shingle Anhelo, which produced “Y tu mama tambien” and co-produced Guillermo del Toro’s “The Devil’s Backbone.”

Another Anhelo production, “The Assassination of Richard Nixon,” was picked up by ThinkFilm (Daily Variety, Aug. 31). Directed by Niels Muller, the English-language drama stars Sean Penn and Naomi Watts.

Both pics had their world premieres in Cannes and are slated for North American preems in Toronto.

Palm has scheduled a mid-2005 theatrical release for “Cronicas.”

Shot in Ecuador, “Cronicas” follows a Miami reporter entangled in a battle of wits with the serial killer he has been tracking. Cordero won the Sundance NHK Award for Latin American screenplay last year.

Co-producers include Bertha Navarro and Isabel Davalos, with Frida Torresblanco as executive producer.

Focus Features picked up international sales rights to the pic at the Cannes film fest in May.
