Six-film retrospective includes preview screenings

The American Museum of the Moving Image will host “Violent Lives, Fragile Beauty: The Films of Takeshi Kitano.”

The six-film retrospective of the work of the Japanese director and media personality Kitano will include preview screenings of his most recent pics, “Zatoichi” and “Dolls.”

Miramax release “Zatoichi,” about the Japanese samurai tradition, had its Gotham preem Saturday at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“Dolls,” three love stories told through puppet theater, will be distributed by Palm Pictures.

Also on the AMMI sked are Kitano’s “Fireworks,” “A Scene at the Sea,” “Sonatine” and “Kids Return.”

Series runs May 15-21.
