Lumiere Awards puts spotlight on ‘Triplets’

Resnais, Todeschini, Testud also among winners

PARIS — Oscar nominee “The Triplets of Belleville” earned the top French film prize Tuesday at the Lumiere Awards, France’s smaller-scale answer to the Golden Globes.

The event honored Alain Resnais as director for his musical comedy “Not on the Lips.”

Both pics last month jointly received the Golden Star for French film, an award determined by film journalists working in France.

The two pics also feature among nominees for the Cesar Awards, France’s equivalent of the Oscars, taking place Saturday.

“Not on the Lips” is one of the upcoming event’s big favorites, with nine noms, while “Triplets” is up for three Cesars.

“Triplets” will compete against “Finding Nemo” and “Brother Bear” for the animated film Oscar and also is in the running for original song at the Academy Awards on Feb. 29.

Other Lumiere winners were Bruno Todeschini, who scooped actor kudos for Patrice Chereau’s “His Brother”; Sylvie Testud, actress winner for Alain Corneau’s “Fear and Trembling”; Julie Bertucelli and Bernard Renucci, landing screenplay kudos for “Since Otar Left”; and Denys Arcand’s “The Barbarian Invasions,” which won the Francophone film section.

Male newcomer honors went to Gregori Derangere for “Bon Voyage” and female newcomer went to Sasha Andres for “She’s One of Us.”
