James looks for love in Smith’s ‘Kiss’

Thesp looks to join Tennant-helmed comedy

“King of Queens” star Kevin James is negotiating a lead role in the Will Smith laffer “Last First Kiss” at Columbia Pictures.

James would play Albert, the primary client of a date doctor (Smith) who claims his service can match folks for life in just three dates. A female journalist (Eva Mendes) enlists in the program, intent on exposing the doc as a scam artist.

“Sweet Home Alabama” helmer Andy Tennant is directing.

Overbrook Entertainment’s James Lassiter and Teddy Zee are producing. Wink Mordaunt exec produces. Original script by Kevin Bisch and rewritten by Jessica Bendinger was rewritten by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel.

The Endeavor-repped James currently stars alongside Adam Sandler in Col’s “50 First Dates.” He is the star and exec producer of CBS’s comedy “King of Queens.”

Upcoming projects include playing Babe Ruth in “Slugger” for Miramax; and New Line’s “Men Don’t Quit,” in which he’ll be paired with Ray Romano (Daily Variety, Feb. 20).
