Universal Pictures is teaming up with “Avenue Q” songwriters Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx for an untitled musical comedy.
Project comes from Marc Platt Prods., which has a first-look deal with U. Film exec Platt segued to Broadway this season as a producer of “Wicked.” He and Adam Siegel came up with the idea for what they call a “star-driven, high-concept musical comedy,” and presented it to Lopez and Marx, who will make it their first screenplay.
“This is a case of the studio looking to the Broadway community and bringing those creatives into the movie business,” Platt said.
In a legit twist, Platt, as a producer of “Wicked,” soon will be in competition with his collaborators from “Avenue Q.” The tuners are expected to be battling for Tony Awards in June.
