Exhib Century plans 12-plex

Venue includes stadium seating, café, digital sound

Century Theaters said Tuesday it plans to build a 12-screen multiplex in the Bay Area city of Hayward.

Alameda County move dovetails with San Rafael exhib’s enthusiasm for projects keying on downtown revitalization projects. Circuit also operates theaters in downtown areas of northern California’s Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, San Mateo and Redwood City markets.

“We’ve been very successful in all of our downtown projects,” observed Raymond Syufy, chairman-CEO at Century.

Amenities at the Hayward theater will include stadium seating, digital surroundsound stereo, wall-to-wall movie screens, rocking love seats and a cinema cafe. Auditoriums will be designed for Lucasfilm THX certification.

Multiplex will be part of a Cinema Place restaurants and retail center, being developed by Blake Hunt Ventures.

“We believe Cinema Place will be a catalyst for the renaissance of downtown Hayward,” said Brad Blake, CEO of Blake Hunt.

Century operates more than 900 screens in 11 states.
