Principal photography to begin in mid-October

Doom” is imminent at Universal, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson circling the pic.

U is very much committed to making the vidgame-derived “Doom,” last week hiring Polish director Andrzej Bartkowiak (“Cradle 2 the Grave”) in a pay-or-play pact.

Studio has inked a deal with Kiwi thesp Karl Urban (“The Bourne Supremacy,” “The Chronicles of Riddick”) to star in the pic, which is being produced by Par-based Lorenzo di Bonaventura and John Wells.

Dave Callahan penned the screenplay, which loosely follows the plot of vidgame “Doom3.”

Bartkowiak replaced original “Doom” director Enda McCallion, who had bowed out citing personal reasons. The change in helmers, a U spokesman said last week, will have no effect on the film’s production schedule, which calls for principal photography to begin in mid-October.

Johnson is also also attached to John Woo’s adaptation of vidgame “Spy Hunter” at U.
