RIO DE JANEIRO — The producers behind the successful “Mary, the Mother of God’s Son” will make “The Apostles” as part of a plan to release one religion-themed pic a year.
Diler & Associados and Columbia TriStar will release “The Apostles” mid-September.
“Mary” opened in October and sold 2.3 million tickets, above the producers’ original estimates. The pic attracted senior citizens who crowded the usually empty afternoon weekday screenings.
Moacyr Goes, who helmed “Mary,” will also direct the $1.5 million-budgeted “Apostles.”
Lensing is scheduled for May and July, with two weeks in a Rio studio and three weeks in locations.
“We plan to shoot part of the location scenes in Jerusalem,” Diler Trindade, president of Diler & Associados, said.
“The Apostles” will focus on the formation of the early Catholic Church. Producer Father Marcelo Rossi will be featured in the pic as a character recounting the story to a child living in a reformatory.
Brazil is the largest Catholic country in terms of population in the world.
