'Diaries' takes desert festival

Walter Salles will receive the Intl. Filmmaker Award for “The Motorcycle Diaries” at the 16th Palm Springs Film Festival. Helmer was also selected for his producing and mentoring contributions to the Latin American filmmaking community.

Salles was co-producer of Brazilian multi-Oscar nominees “City of God” and “Central Station,” as well as director of the 2001 Golden Globe foreign-language film nominee “Behind the Sun.” He is producing “Cidade Baixa” and recently wrapped “Dark Water,” a thriller starring Jennifer Connelly.

The Palm Springs fest runs Jan. 6-17.
