MADRID — Sales house Kevin Williams Associates has taken international sales rights to “Hay motivo” (There’s Good Cause), a composite agitprop pic made by 33 helmers that criticized contempo Spain under Jose Maria Aznar’s Popular Party.
“Cause” was turned around in a month when the PP looked likely to win a third consecutive term of office in March.
Three-minute segs were shot on digital video free of charge by the helmers, including David Trueba, Imanol Uribe, Jose Luis Cuerda and Vicente Aranda.
Through talking-heads docs and dramatized sketches, “Cause” grinds many axes: escalating house prices, a toxic waste sluice, journo Jose Cousso’s death under U.S. fire in Iraq. Pedro Almodovar called it “a kick in the government’s balls.”
The PP went on to lose the election shortly after the Madrid train bombings; the film received relatively little exposure but much buzz.
“Cause” will screen twice in the Cannes Film Festival market.
