Van Sant goes grunge for ‘Last Days’

Pic to explore the final moments of singer Cobain

After working with HBO Films last year on “Elephant” which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, helmer Gus Van Sant is reteaming with the cabler on pic “Last Days,” to star Michael Pitt, Asia Argento and Lukas Haas.

Pic, which is shooting in New York state, was penned by Van Sant and is being produced by his “Elephant” collaborator Dany Wolf.

In the same way “Elephant” improvised a story out of the Columbine high school tragedy, new drama, set in the Seattle grunge scene takes a parallel track to the final stages of the life of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. They’ll work from a loose script and employ the same semi-documentary visual style as “Elephant.”

Harris Savides, who shot “Elephant” and “Gerry” for Van Sant, is d.p. on the low-budget feature, which is expected to be released domestically via HBO’s distribution pact with Fine Line Features.
