Toon boy inspires Argentinean studio

'Patoruzito' sequel, TV series in works

Argentinean animated blockbuster “Patoruzito” is spawning a toon studio in the South American nation.

Co-producer Jorge Rodriguez of Red Lojo Entertainment has drawn up plans to exploit fully the franchise about Patoruzito, a boy who fights to claim the title of cacique (chief) of his tribe in Patagonia.

“We hope to produce at least one animated feature every two years,” said Rodriguez, who aims to launch the studio in April.

Rodriguez owns rights to the 75-year-old cartoon boy, based on a character created by Dante Quinterno. “He is Argentina’s very own Mickey Mouse and is just as old,” Rodriguez said.

The pic, helmed by Jose Luis Massa in Argentina and using 150 local animators, drew more than 2 million admissions.

A sequel and TV series is in the works, and Rodriguez plans to spin off characters from the adventure yarn. Merchandising and promotional tie-ins based on the characters have already been a good source of revenue.

“Patoruzito” co-producer Patagonik Film Group owns worldwide rights to the movie and has signed Spain-based Latido as its international sales agent. It is uncertain whether Patagonik will participate in the sequel.

Rodriguez’s yet-to-be-named studio will go up against Patagonik, which has produced seven animated features, including “Dibu” and two of its sequels, and “Condor Crux.”
