Rapper offered seven-figure deal for coaching story

Fox has decided to play with Snoop Dogg, signing the rap star to topline the real-life story of coaching his son’s youth league football team and setting up the project at Mandeville Films with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman producing.

Fox outbid Paramount and Columbia in a seven-figure deal for Snoop Dogg’s rights to his story of coaching the Rowland Heights Raiders, a team of 8- to 10-year-old boys in the Orange County Junior All-American Football League. The team, with Snoop Dogg’s son at quarterback, finished its recent season winning the league championship with a 13-0 record.

The project, to be penned by Mark Gibson and Philip Halprin, is being developed as an inspirational comedy focused on an overworked hip-hop star who dedicates himself to coaching his son’s team.

The project sparked to life a few weeks ago following publication of a Los Angeles Times profile of Snoop Dogg, which highlighted his involvement as a coach.

Fox production prexy Hutch Parker and exec VP Debbie Liebling made the deal after being pitched by Snoop Dogg and the writers, whose credits include “Snow Dogs” and the upcoming Disney animated project “The Wild.”

Snoop Dogg, who will exec produce, appeared in “Soul Plane” and “Starsky and Hutch.” He’ll next be seen in “The Tenants,” starring with Dylan McDermott and Rose Byrne in a drama produced by Emmett/Furla and Millennium.

Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Broadus, has been a rap star for more than a decade. His “Drop It Like It’s Hot” single with producer Pharrell Williams was nominated this week for two Grammys and his recently released “R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece” album is a strong seller.

Mandeville, headed by Hoberman, was a producer on “Raising Helen” and “Walking Tall.”
