‘Polar 3-D’ is big news for Imax

'Express' rolls over 'Matrix'

“The Polar Express: An Imax 3-D Experience” has taken $18 million at the box office in five weeks, becoming the highest-grossing digitally remastered Imax pic.

It beats the record set by “The Matrix Reloaded: The Imax Experience,” which grossed just over $14 million in 22 weeks.

Playing on 77 Imax screens around the world, “Polar Express” chugged away with an estimated $2.53 million from Friday through Sunday, with the North American gross essentially unchanged compared to the previous weekend.

The 15 international screens playing the movie contributed approximately $500,000 of the total gross.

The Imax “Polar Express” began rolling out to international markets during the past two weeks, with day-and-date openings on 11 screens in the U.K., Spain, Poland, Malaysia, the Czech Republic and Taipei.
