Numerous helmers, thesps had circled project
Paul McGuigan is on board to direct “Fortune’s Fools” for Working Title and Universal.
Working Title has made a priority of the long-gestating cop tale, about five officers who steal a winning lottery ticket from a drug dealer, and is trying to put a cast in place.
“We’re hoping to shoot here in L.A. this summer,” said McGuigan, who is reworking the script with scribe Erik Bergquist.
“The project has been around for a long time, but I think that’s a good thing,” the helmer said. “It means there’s something there but it just hasn’t happened for some reason. It’s just a well written script.”
He added, “I’m going to put my own stamp on it, but the story isn’t going to change.”
Numerous helmers and thesps have circled the project. Most recently, James Foley was attached to direct. At one point, the project was eyed by Michael Mann.
Paramount Classics released McGuigan’s latest pic, “The Reckoning,” starring Willem Dafoe, on March 9. Later this year, MGM will release his film “Wicker Park.”
“Fortune’s Fools” is being produced by Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner as well as Michael London and Paul Schiff.
Overseeing for Working Title is Liza Chasin.
