Szabo's pic toplines Bening as a London stage thesp
TORONTO — The world premiere of Istvan Szabo’s “Being Julia” will open the 29th Toronto Intl. Film Festival on Sept. 9, organizers announced Tuesday.
Pic, based on the novel by Somerset Maugham, stars Annette Bening as a London stage actress who embarks on a passionate affair that threatens to ruin her career and marriage.
It’s the second collaboration between Szabo and producer Robert Lantos, and is scripted by Ron Harwood (“The Pianist”).
“Being Julia” is produced by Serendipity Point Films in association with First Choice Films, Astral Media, Telefilm Canada and Corus Entertainment. Pic is distributed in Canada by THINKfilm and in the U.S. by Sony Pictures Classics. Summit Entertainment is international sales agent.
This is the ninth film produced by Lantos to open Toronto, which ends this year on Sept. 18.
Two theaters are being added to the Toronto venues. They are the state-of-the-art Famous Players Paramount Theater, a stone’s throw from the Festival Group’s future headquarters, which soon will break ground at the corner of King and John streets, and the Ryerson Theater, a 1,200-seat venue close to nearby Dundas Square.
