British screenwriter Duane Hopkins has won the first European Union Media New Talent prize for his script “Better Things,” European Culture Commissioner Viviane Reding announced Tuesday.
Hopkins will receive E50,000 ($60,000) to develop his script about contemporary rural life in Britain. He’ll also have the opportunity to present the script to producers and distributors during the Cannes Film Festival.
The prize was awarded during the fest’s second European Day, attended by culture ministers from 20 of the 25 member states in the expanded European Union. Issues discussed by the ministers included state aid and cross-border distribution of films.
“We want to ensure that there are lots of European stars on the Croisette now and in the future,” Reding said. “Cinema needs our national and European aid and it will continue like that.”
