Duo getting in ‘Line’

Salles, Brazilian co. partner on thriller, drama

New Brazilian shingle Luz & Imaginacao has teamed up with Walter Salles’ VideoFilmes to co-produce thriller “The Yellow Line” and period drama “Cinemeiro,” both in pre-production.

Helmer J. Emilio Rondeau, whose upcoming feature debut “1972” is co-produced by Disney’s Latin American label Miravista and Brazilian sales/production company Grupo Novo, will co-produce and direct “The Yellow Line.”

Rondeau and wife Ana Maria Bahiana are founding partners in Luz & Imaginacao.

“Yellow Line,” set during a heatwave in Rio de Janeiro, follows a former hitman forced to return to the underworld to rescue his kid sister, who has followed in his footsteps.

“Cinemeiro,” to be shot in Japanese, Portuguese and English, follows a traveling film company that must decide whether it should screen to the Japanese community in Brazil a newsreel documenting Japan’s defeat in World War II.

“Cinemeiro’s” screenplay received the Won Kadokawa Film Award in Japan, according to Bahiana.

Luz & Imaginacao also will produce a Brazilian version of Oscar-nominated Cuban music docu “Buena Vista Social Club,” which will explore the world of samba master Zeca Pagodinho and his friends. It is based on the short “Zeca’s Backyard,” which will screen at the Miami Film Festival.

The company has teamed up with Brazil’s Focus Films to co-produce adventure period drama “The Moorish Captain.” Based on a true story, it is set in 17th-century Brazil, where an Arab and a Jew join forces to defend a community of runaway slaves, destitute Indians and impoverished white farmers.

Focus principals Tuinho Schwartz and Nadine Mourad are in Cannes to present the project in the Market’s Producers Network.
