Docs bracket Slamdance

Park City fest sets 23 premiere pix

Marilyn Agrelo’s ballroom-dancing documentary “Mad Hot Ballroom” will be the opening pic of the 11th annual Slamdance Film Festival, which runs Jan. 21-28 in Park City, Utah.

Work-in-progress doc “I Know I Am Not Alone,” directed by Michael Franti, will close the fest.

Twenty-three world and U.S. features will premiere at the fest. Lineup includes 11 competition narrative features, eight competition docs, six special screenings and seven midnight screenings, as well as close to 80 shorts.

Rob Stefaniuk’s laffer “Phil the Alien,” Arin Crumley and Susan Buice’s “Four-Eyed Monster” and David Greenspan’s romantic comedy “Mall Cop” are among narrative pics in competition.

The competitive docu category includes Jennifer Abel and Jeff Hockett’s “Abel Raises Cain” and Don Bernier’s “In a Nutshell.”

The fest has expanded to include a second screening venue. In addition, the event will expand its Salt Lake City screenings to two theaters.

The Big C Gaming Competition and the Teleplay Competition are new additions to the fest.
