Oscar winner recruited to join Gyllenhaal, Foxx

NEW YORK — Chris Cooper has been drafted to play the commander of an elite Marine sniper unit in the bigscreen adaptation of Anthony Swofford’s Gulf War memoir “Jarhead.” Sam Mendes directs for Universal.

Cooper joins Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx and Peter Sarsgaard in the cast.

Red Wagon partners Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing the pic, which is currently shooting. William Broyles scripted.

Cooper, who won a 2003 supporting actor Oscar for “Adaptation,” also appears in the upcoming George Clooney vehicle “Syriana” for Warner Bros. and in the biopic “Capote,” opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman, for United Artists.
